Chief Christopher J. LeClaire joined the Newburyport Fire Department in June 2013, coming from the Portsmouth, N.H. Fire Department where he served as Chief for 12 years. Chief LeClaire has over 30 years of experience in public safety in fire, EMS and law enforcement.
Chief LeClaire holds a degree in Fire Science and several management certificates from the National Fire Academy. He is an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Certified Firefighter Level 3, Certified Fire Officer 4, and a certified Fire Instructor 2. Chief LeClaire is also a nationally accredited Chief Fire Officer through the Commission on Professional Credentialing.
Chief LeClaire also serves as the city’s Emergency Management Director, responsible for the planning and preparation of the community and the response and mitigation of disasters, both natural and man-made. Chief LeClaire has been involved in the planning process for the Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant throughout his entire career.
Chief LeClaire has served as the President of the Seacoast Chief Fire Officers Mutual Aid District for the last 12 years, representing 40 communities in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine. He is also an active member in several other fire service organizations including the National Fire Protection Association, the International Association of Fire Chiefs, and many others.
Chief LeClaire has four children, three sons and a daughter. The Chief enjoys motorcycles, auto racing and spending time with his children.
