To the Newburyport Community,
It is with profound sadness we share the news of the loss of Firefighter Brett Burkinshaw.
Firefighter Burkinshaw passed away yesterday, after a 19 month long battle with progressive brain cancer. His passing is considered an occupational line of duty death, and he will receive a formal firefighter funeral with full honors. He leaves behind a loving wife and daughter.
We have lost an irreplaceable member of our department, a committed public safety professional and a remarkable human being. I personally wish to thank each and every member of our community for the tremendous kindness and generosity they have demonstrated in the wake of his diagnosis– our community rallied together to fundraise to support Firefighter Burkinshaw’s family during this difficult time. That support was tremendously meaningful and appreciated, and it’s a testament to Firefighter Burkinshaw’s impact on our community as well as the spirit of our city.
Firefighter Burkinshaw first joined our department in May 2003, and became a full-time member in August 2010. He also served as a reserve police officer for the Newburyport Police Department starting in July 2005. His commitment to this city, and public safety, was extraordinary.
Additional details regarding his funeral and arrangements will be shared in the coming days.
Sincerely,
Chief Christopher LeClaire
